The Machame Route is one of the most popular and scenic ways to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m), offering breathtaking scenery and excellent acclimatisation through the mountain's varied ecological zones — from lush rainforest, through moorland and alpine desert, to the arctic summit zone. Supported by experienced guides, cooks and porters, this 8-day itinerary balances natural beauty with a strong chance of summit success.
Arrive in Tanzania and transfer to your hotel in Arusha. In the evening, meet your professional mountain guide for a detailed briefing on the trekking schedule, safety procedures and equipment inspection ahead of tomorrow's climb.
Drive to Machame Gate to register with park authorities, then begin trekking through beautiful tropical rainforest at a steady “Pole Pole” pace, with a picnic lunch on the trail before arriving at Machame Camp.
Leave the rainforest for the stunning moorland zone, with spectacular views of Mount Meru, the Shira Plateau and Kibo Peak's glaciers as you climb toward Shira Camp for one of Kilimanjaro's most amazing sunsets.
A key acclimatisation day, trekking across alpine desert to Lava Tower for lunch and rest at altitude, before descending into the scenic Barranco Valley, surrounded by impressive cliffs and giant Senecio plants.
Climb the famous (non-technical) Barranco Wall for spectacular views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding valleys, then continue across ridges to Karanga Camp, with a shorter day to help your body recover before the summit push.
A short but essential day crossing the dry alpine desert to Barafu Camp, the final base before the summit attempt, where your crew will brief you on the night ahead before an early dinner and rest.
Begin the midnight summit push toward Stella Point and on to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, before descending to Barafu for refreshments and continuing down to the warmer Mweka Camp.
Complete your final descent through the rainforest to Mweka Gate, receive your official summit certificate, and thank your mountain crew before transferring back to Arusha to celebrate your achievement.
